And Will Zalatoris should\u2019ve hit from 37 yards away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Had they, they wouldn&#8217;t have each been hit with two-stroke penalties and, as it turned out, pay-stub deductions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be expensive,\u201d analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/news\/mark-rolfing-new-nbc-contract\/\">Mark Rolfing<\/a> said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n  <div class=\"g-block-wrapper g-block-parone-video g-block-wrapper--video\">\n    <div id=\"parone-video--one\" class=\"inline-video inline-video--inline preroll-video-container\"\n      data-content-key=\"921cb8fd\"\n      data-feed=\"63-all-system-videos\"\n      data-stylesheet=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/wp-content\/themes\/golf\/assets\/styles\/inline-player.css\"\n      data-vast-override-id=\"one\"\n      data-class=\"video-player\"\n      data-keep-ads-playing-offscreen=\"true\"\n      data-docked-logo=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/wp-content\/themes\/golf\/assets\/images\/logo.png\"\n      data-default-res=\"720\"\n              data-position=\"middle\"\n                                data-dockable=\"true\"\n                    data-autoplay=\"true\"\n                    data-key1=\"Rules\"\n                    data-window-url=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/instruction\/rules\/going-expensive-pros-confusion-4-penalty-strokes\/\"><\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue? During Sunday\u2019s final round of the PGA Tour\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/news\/hideki-matsuyama-historical-pga-tour-score-wins-sentry\/\">Sentry tournament<\/a>, each pro learned they\u2019d hit each other\u2019s ball on their third swings on the 551-yard, par-5 15th hole on the Plantation Course at Kapalua \u2014 a no-no according to the rules. <a href=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/news\/cam-davis-amanda-balionis-rocket-mortgage-interview\/\">Davis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/news\/will-zalatoris-weight-gain-pga-tour\/\">Zalatoris<\/a> then played from where they should\u2019ve, plus two shots, and finished with bogeys.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did it happen? Neither player spoke in formal press conferences afterward, though announcers on the Golf Channel broadcast offered some thoughts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said Rolfing: \u201cWow, what a pair of mistakes there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said <a href=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/instruction\/dan-hicks-off-course-golf-broadcast\/\">Dan Hicks<\/a>: \u201cEspecially with the money involved here and the FedEx Cup points. It\u2019s just frustrating, disappointing, everything above.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said Rolfing: \u201cAlmost doesn\u2019t seem possible in today\u2019s game. You cannot play your own ball.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said Hicks: \u201cLosing a little bit of focus, right? Just kind of get careless.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, Davis tied for 13th and cashed for $410,000, while Zalatoris tied for 26th and took home $163,333.33. But what if they had each played the correct ball on the hole \u2014 and not been penalized? Assuming they would&#8217;ve both made birdies, Davis would\u2019ve moved up to a tie for fifth and earned $715,625, while Zalatoris would\u2019ve tied for 15th and collected $283,200 \u2014 the difference in money being $306,625 for Davis, and $119,866.67 for Zalatoris.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, had the players not corrected the mistake before starting the 16th hole, they each would\u2019ve been disqualified. For clarity, here is the wording of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usga.org\/rules\/rules-and-clarifications\/rules-and-clarifications.html#section=rules&amp;itemNum=9\">Rule 6.3c (1)<\/a> that describes what happens when a wrong ball is played:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn stroke play, the player gets the general penalty (two penalty strokes) and must correct the mistake by continuing play with the original ball by playing it as it lies or taking relief under the rules. The stroke made with the wrong ball and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected (including strokes made and any additional penalty strokes solely from playing that ball) do not count.
