I\u2019ve been to the Masters<\/a> before, but before last week it had been a while. Thanks to a friend with tickets, though, I was able to surprise my son with a trip to the best tournament in golf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been to plenty of PGA Tour events during my career, but the Masters is just different. There\u2019s truly nothing else like it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are 10 reasons why I love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Small-town charm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Augusta is not the easiest place to get to, but that doesn't take away from the enjoyment. When you drive to the course, you'll see plenty of stands selling tickets on the secondary market and fans walking over to the tournament. (That's not to mention the collection of Waffle House locations scattered throughout the town.) The Masters is a global event, and the town of Augusta does a great job welcoming all the visitors. During Masters week, there's nothing more important in northeast Georgia than the golf tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

2. Easy parking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Parking for most huge events is a headache, but not at the Masters. You can park right off Berckman\u2019s<\/a> Rd (for free) and walk right up to the gates. It\u2019s so simple and efficient, and other events should take note! We met tons of other patrons walking in the gates, and hearing their backstories was very interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Efficient lines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Standing in line to get in there is a certain buzz in the air. Everyone is so excited. But while everyone is anxious to get in, there\u2019s no chaos trying to get in. Everyone waits patiently and politely. When you finally get to the front of the line, the workers says, \u201cWelcome to the Masters.\u201d You can\u2019t help but crack a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Friendly staff<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of the staff, everyone is so friendly! Whether it\u2019s just southern hospitality or Masters charm I\u2019m not sure, but anytime we had a question it was easy to find an answer. One volunteer told us they\u2019d been working the event for 25 years, and they were rewarded with two week-long passes that they shared with friends. Not a bad tradeoff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Historic back nine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The entire course is special, but I\u2019d recommend walking the back nine first. It\u2019s so special seeing all the historic spots where some of the most famous shots in golf have happened. Once you get to Amen Corner, it\u2019ll take your breath away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Immaculate conditions <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It goes without saying, but the conditions at Augusta National are unlike anywhere else. There's not a blade of grass out of place. The bunkers are white as snow. And the greens are slick as glass. We went the day after a huge storm, and the course was still in perfect condition. It's amazing how well they maintain the grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Excellent concessions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Masters is known for its affordable concessions, and they live up to the hype. The pimento cheese sandwich is a fan favorite, and it's hard to go wrong with an Azalea cocktail. The prices might be cheap, but the fare is still high quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

8. Honor system seating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At Augusta National, patrons can purchase their very own Masters chairs to use on the course. It's tradition for fans to set up their chairs and leave them while they walk the course, knowing they will still be there when they return. I'd always known of this tradition, but it was cool to see it in person. If you place your chair down in a prime viewing location, you've got your spot reserved for the entire day. Pretty cool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Amazing golf<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With so much fanfare around the event, it can be easy to forget that there's an actual tournament going on, but watching the best players in the world compete on such a great course is a real treat. And when Tiger is there, it just takes things to a new level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. No phones<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are no phones allowed at the Masters, and while that might seem inconvenient, it's actually quite nice. Spending time with your family and friends in such a special place, without the distraction of technology, is quite nice. Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake<\/a> are getting together this week, but not for a late-night talk-show interview. The occasion is the 2024 8AM Invitational<\/a>, a charity event, orchestrated by Timberlake, featuring 28 celebrity golfers in a team-oriented competition at Wynn Las Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this were People Magazine, we\u2019d dish on the participants. But this is GOLF.com, so let\u2019s delve into the course. Here are six things you should know about the Wynn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

1. It\u2019s got a Rat Pack past<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before it was the Wynn, the property was the Desert Inn, a resort and casino with a course of the same name, which hosted PGA Tour, Champions and LPGA events. It was also the regular stomping grounds of Frank, Dino and the gang. You know, the golf and gimlet-loving Rat Pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. It\u2019s the only course directly on the Strip<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are other options near<\/em> the Strip. But only at the Wynn can you spend all night at the tables then walk directly with your winnings to the pro shop, which in turn gives way to the first tee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. You\u2019ll pay a premium<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not Shadow Creek-spendy (green fees there recently jumped to $1,250), but it\u2019s a high-roller's course \u2014 $800 is what a round will cost you, not including a caddie, who can help keep you away from all the water hazards, not to mention all the other trouble you avoid by spending four-plus hours on the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

4. It\u2019s a Fazio design<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Fazio, that is. The same man who did Shadow Creek. He cut the ribbon at the Wynn in 2005 and returned 14 years later with his son, Logan, to freshen up 10 holes and build eight new ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. It\u2019s next door to the Sphere<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odds are you\u2019ve seen pictures. Maybe you\u2019ve been to the venue yourself. That humongous globe-shaped structure, which opened last year, rehabbing the Vegas skyline? That would be the Sphere, and it looms just beyond the boundaries of the course, sometimes gawking at you when its video screen-covered exterior transforms into a giant blinking eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. The final hole is rinse\/reward<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wynn has water, not quite everywhere, but plentiful enough to be a factor on a number of holes, nowhere more dramatically than on the par-3 18th, which plays over a lake and is backed by an enormous waterfall. There are lots of ways to make bogey on this dramatic finisher. But make an ace, and you win anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000, depending on the distance from which you jar the shot.<\/p>\n","post_title":"Heading to Las Vegas? In recent weeks, GOLF\u2019s editors and course raters have been working to identify exceptional golf courses in the United States that you can play for less than $100 (meaning courses at which the peak-season walking rates do not crack three figures).    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, we published a list of the best courses with green fees under $150<\/a> and also a ranking of America\u2019s best municipal courses<\/a>. Some of those courses will form the foundation of our Best Under $100 list, but there will also be newcomers, and this is where you come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which courses not<\/em> already in those rankings \u2014 and that meet our under $100 criteria (see below) \u2014 do you think belong on our Under $100 list?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
