She’d just said a short prayer. She’d been staring ahead. On her walk up to the tee box, she signed a quick autograph. Thompson always has time for her fans, even on this stage. And what a day it was. Thursday, during the first round of the Shriners Children’s Open, Thompson became the seventh woman ever to play a round on the PGA Tour, but the “girl” appeared calm. Ahead of Thursday, much had been made of this all — most of it was supportive, though one player called it a “gimmick” — but Thompson herself was thrilled. And ready. In women’s golf, she’s a star, with 11 wins over her 13-year pro career, including a major. She’s a bomber, too. Some of this week wasn’t new, either. The 28-year-old from Florida has been playing pro events since she was 12. She regularly plays with her brothers, Curtis and Nicholas, who both made Tour appearances. Now there are three Thompsons with that distinction. Lexi spoke of her turn hopefully being an inspiration.

And then, five-plus hours after she started, Thompson marked her ball on the 17th green and picked it up, as darkness suspended play until Friday morning. She was one-over par for her first round with a hole-plus to play, and she was tied for 76th in the 131-player field, 10 shots behind leader Beau Hossler.

Noted. It's important to remember that these are still 100% a blade iron but it's small design details like this that separate them from a traditional muscle back blade.

Results: Let's kick this one off with the detail most golfers are concerned with when looking at a golf club in this category: feel.

The Mizar Pro irons feel just as good as any forged iron I've ever hit including Vega's own one-piece forged VMBs. I'll be honest in saying that I was slightly concerned the hollow cavity containing the various weight bars would have an impact on impact sound and feel but if you were to cover up the screw that covers the weight port I don't think I'd even know it was there.

One place I did notice a difference though was in the performance, not just in the longer irons where I really expected to see the ball flight pop up a bit more, but also in the shorter irons where I was able to control flight and spin. I think it was a perfect combination of the slightly stronger lofts of the irons (the pitching wedge comes in at 44 degrees compared to most blades that come in between 46-48°) and the extra weight placed higher in the head made possible thanks to the lightweight aluminum bar that is only 3 grams.

The stronger lofts helped me maintain the level of distance I usually find with cavity back irons while also helping to keep apex height down for greater control. From a fitter's perspective, the stronger lofts and shifting CoG help eliminate one of the biggest issues I see a lot faster players struggle with when looking at muscle back irons — too much spin.

Conclusion: If you're a golfer who enjoys using smaller blade and blade-style irons, but is also looking for the distance and workability that stronger lofts and more modern technology can provide, then the Vega Mizar Pro irons could be the perfect option for you to test out.

Want to overhaul your bag for 2023? Find a fitting location near you at True Spec Golf.

Classic looks, modern tech — we test the Vega Mizar Pro irons | Proving Ground
The Vega Mizar Pro irons bring together blade looks with modern construction and we found out how they perform in real-world conditions.

Kyle Berkshire's power off the tee is a sight (and sound) to behold.

The world long drive pro routinely generates over 145 mph of clubhead speed, and his ball shoots off the clubface in excess of 230 mph. (He used a persimmon driver and balata ball but was aided by a 27-mph wind at his back.)

But there are recorded instances of longer whacks.

Carl Cooper once hit a drive that measured nearly 800 yards on the PGA Tour, but that belt was aided by (several) cart paths. In the world of long drive, Scott Smith hit a drive 539 yards, and then in 2007, Mike Dobbin hit a drive that measured 551 yards.

"Five-hundred-fifty-one yards is the longest that there's veracity for," Berkshire said before making a run at the record. "It was hit on a golf course with golf-course conditions ... But with weather conditions deteriorating at Rochelle Ranch, they cut their West Coast swing short and headed to Wyoming a bit earlier than expected.

On shoot day, the forecast looked ominous.

"Around 11:45, as I'm still getting stuff figured out for how the attempt was gonna go down in a couple hours, [fellow long driver] Bobby Bradley came busting through the doors and said, 'Dude, you've gotta go right now,'" Berkshire said. "So we scrambled about a hundred people and got out there and had balls in the air by 12:10."

It didn't take Berkshire long to set the record. This isn’t a new beef, of course. There’s always grumbling anytime a celebrity accepts a PGA Tour or Korn Ferry invite, as have the likes of Tony Romo, Steph Curry and Jerry Rice. Lindsey understands that resentment but believes the pros far outweigh any cons.

“We always want to make sure that we are doing the right things for players and that we are talking to players and agents,” he said. “We want to make sure that we our field is as strong as possible all the time.”

But Lindsey added: “I can’t sit here and say my thoughts on how other players would react [to Thompson’s exemption] was a huge consideration — it was probably a little bit of a consideration — because at the end of the day, I think having Lexi in the field and on the broadcast, it’s only going to bring more eyes to the broadcast, which will bring more eyes to the golfers who are here and the golfers’ sponsors that are on their shirts and hats and bags. Everyone should be looking at this from a very positive standpoint, because we’re bringing more eyes to the players, Shriners, the city, the golf course, all of it.”

In Lindsey’s many interactions with players so far this week — on the range, during the pro-am — he said he has received no gripes or blowback.

Does Thompson’s result matter this week? It could, sure.

If she struggles to keep up and misses the cut by a wide margin, she’ll still have accomplished her goal of playing on Tour and no doubt have inspired a legion of young players who look up to her. If she makes the cut, it’ll be one of the great sports stories of the year.

For that to happen, Thompson will, perhaps above all, need to control her nerves. When Brittany Lincicome played in the Barbasol Championship five years ago, she opened with a 77 that included double-bogies on two of the par-3s. In the second round, when she said she felt far less jittery, Lincicome shot a 71 that included an eagle and a stretch of three consecutive birdies. (Two rounds of 71 would have left her just two shots above the cutline.)

“I've been under the microscope I guess since I was 12 years old,” Thompson said. “You just have to block out everything and believe in yourself and go after what you want. No added pressure. That's what I want. I want to have women support me, and me support them. That's what it's all about.”

Thompson’s most obvious disadvantage will be her length. Though she’s long by LPGA standards, her 270-yard driving average in 2023 would rank last, albeit by just a couple of yards, on the PGA Tour. TPC Summerlin can play up to 7,255 yards, or 817 yards longer than the official yardage at Thompson's last LPGA start, the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.

Will Thompson's inclusion in the field in any way influence the TPC Summerlin course setup? Lindsey is not responsible for how the course will play but said: “I would say absolutely not. I think they are going to set up this golf course based on how the weather conditions are going to be. The golf course is in incredible shape, and I would imagine they would set it up the same whether there’s a female in the field or not.”

One potential upside for Thompson: The Thursday forecast in Vegas calls for wind, which could benefit her lower ball flight.

Whatever the conditions, Lindsey said, “I know she’s up for the challenge.”

How Lexi Thompson's surprising PGA Tour invitation came to be
Two weeks ago, even Lexi Thompson didn't know a PGA Tour invite was coming.
